Gema de la Torre graduated in Chemistry in 1993 with the maximum rating and special mention. Then she joined the group of Prof. Tomás Torres at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), and obtained her PhD in Organic Chemistry under his supervision in 1998 (cum laude and special distinction). In 1997, before her doctorate degree, she obtained an Associate Professor position in the Department of Organic Chemistry. After two consecutive postdoctoral stays in the groups of Prof. W. Blau (Trinity College, Dublin, 2000-2001) and Prof. N. Martín (Universidad Complutense de Madrid, 2001-2002), she joined the Nanoscience and Molecular Materials Research Group at UAM. Since May 2008, she holds a permanent position after becoming accredited by a national qualification process. Currently, her scientific activity is aimed at the synthesis and study of molecular materials based on phthalocyanines and structural analogues. In particular, her work focuses on the preparation of multicomponent systems based on phthalocyanine and porphyrin for the study of charge separation processes and as active materials in photovoltaic cells. It is worth highlighting her pioneering work in the functionalization of carbon nanotubes and graphene with phthalocyanines, published in high impact journals. Special mention also deserves its contribution in the area of ​​magnets at the level of a single molecule based on lanthanide phthalocyaninates. All this research work has led to 80 publications, including four book chapters, and two patents. She has been invited to give 20 talks in different national forums and several international conferences. In addition, she has organized two international symposia, a National School of Molecular Materials and has been guest editor of a special issue of the Journal of Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines. She has participated in 35 R & D projects funded by national and international institutions, and has also leaded contracts with pharmaceutical companies (Neuropharma).
